New phenomena in the Contemporary Arabic Novel and Western Influences

It is known, and natural of course, that the Arabic novel has been changing since its rise more than one hundred years ago. There are periods, in addition of some of its stages where the change is deeper, more serious and fundamental to the extent that the change phenomena. The period of the last two or three decades is among those periods and stages. The Arab World in these last two or three decades witnessed, unexpectedly, both forward and backward social and cultural changes. Such unusual development and comprehensive changes in the Arab society and culture would not take place unless the many political and structural events had happened, such as the second gulf war of 1991, the sanctions which was imposed by America and the West against Iraq in the nineties, the two Palestinian uprisings (accompanied by many events), resolutions and decisions made by the world and the United Nation towards crises in many Arab countries, the American occupation of Iraq, and finally the Arab Spring.
Being mostly realistic or, at least, interactive with society, politics and the social development and changes, Arabic novel has reacted and responded to all these social and political changes and developments with changes in the art of writing, structure, and the subjects and issues treated by the novelists. The big and overall result of all these changes and developments are phenomena made the Arabic novel of the last two or three decades defers from the Arabic novel that had been known before on many levels. Of these phenomena, the one which we are going to study is the evoking and presence of what we call the unspoken. While there were so many things, subjects, and aspects of the Arab personal, in addition to the life and society of the Arabs, which were avoided in the modern Arabic novel, the contemporary novel of the last two or three decades penetrated these subjects and aspects.
Though the phenomenon of evoking of (the unspoken) in the Arabic novel is a result of the social and political changes and developments, as mentioned before, we think that it has been practiced by the novelists while they are influenced by the west. Without the influence of the West on the novelists and the West being sometimes the goal they hope their novels reach, this phenomenon would not have been as it is now. In fact, the Arab novelists imitate in their novels the Western life values and artistic standards, especially when they are concerned with breaching political, religious, and most of all, woman and sexual taboos.
Our research tries to detect the kinds of what we call the unspoken as they are represented in Arabic novels published in the last two decades. By analyzing novels of some of the main Arab novelists of whose experiences in dealing with the unspoken are distinguished, the phenomenon will be carefully explored.
